The nature and art of low water resistance

If you've ever gotten close enough to a shark to see the extraordinary texture of its skin, you've witnessed the most ingenious thing Mother Nature has to offer. Its effect is replicated on our RainSport 3 and RainExpert 3 tyres.

From a distance, sharks appear smooth, almost slippery, but on closer inspection they are covered with scales that resemble miniature interlocking teeth. These teeth, or skin scales, not only serve to protect the shark, they can also ruffle like fur and push water along its body more efficiently, with less drag. And that's how it stalks its prey. Faster. More silently. With less resistance.

Bionics for safety and driving pleasure

The interlocking grooves of the scales inspired our designers to develop the Shark Skin Technology (SST) used on our RainSport 3 and RainExpert 3 tyres. Using bionics, we were able to replicate the effect of shark skin in our tread patterns to prevent the agitation of liquids and quickly expel water from the underside of the tyre.
