The Pharo Appeal! - collective voice

We have no other destiny and no other future than to re-establish our society with the Living World, to consider it as our best model but also as our most powerful and indispensable partner. « Teaming up with nature to shape the future »The "Appel du Pharo" is an invitation to citizens, researchers, decision-makers, entrepreneurs, influencers and politicians to become the gardeners of this new world.

Hubert Reeves was already warning us that we were waging a war against nature, and that if we won, we'd be finished! Yes, we have nothing to gain by destroying living things, but we have a lot to gain by listening to them and rebuilding them, for the sake of our own health and the future of humanity. These multiple crises that we are going through are perhaps also an opportunity to rediscover our unity as a species, our dependence on this world that we thought was outside «ours», and ultimately to rebuild ourselves, as a rebirth in a community of destinies.

To achieve this, we are calling for the development and support of science, knowledge and research as a breeding ground for understanding and solutions, to stimulate our curiosity and wonder, our ability to blend our talents to break out of our silos, to break out of our dogmas and chapels to open our minds and produce new ideas, to leave behind our posture of master who would like to be or believe himself to be in control and who is no longer so in the face of the collapse of biodiversity and the impacts of climate change. We are calling for our reintegration into the world.

Tomorrow has already begun, and our ecosystems are teeming with solutions, scientific knowledge, innovations and experiments that are proving themselves in the field and revealing that other fields of possibility exist. Our challenge is not always to create something new, it's also to grow what's already there.

In his famous speech in Chicago in 1970, Georges Pompidou said, «.« Man's hold over Nature has become such that it entails the risk of destroying Nature itself ». Here we are, but this dystopian warning now needs to be rephrased to take account of the fact that it is now ourselves that we are endangering, even more than Nature, which, even martyred, will survive us.

Our times need reconnection and healing. To build this new world and launch this new momentum, we propose a compass and 3 major coalitions to be implemented as accelerators of renewal.

The compass is Life

This idea of biomimicry, or more generally, of taking inspiration from Life, is powerful and universal. It opens up new narratives that are desirable and unifying, but it is also rational, pragmatic and non-dogmatic. Life is brilliant and powerful. With its 3.8 billion years of experience and evolution, it is thrifty with energy and resources, it works in short circuits, it does not standardise so that it is always the best adapted locally, it does not produce waste and pollution, and it favours cooperation and symbiotic benefits. Life is the specifications and instructions for our future. Let's invite it around the table, ask its opinion and its ideas for solving our challenges. The momentum is there, solutions are emerging, interest is growing, and France has excellence in this field!

Encouraging coalition between us

To pool our talents, to play as a team, to stop judging and verticalising ourselves, to encourage rather than criticise, to believe in creative hybridisation, in the benefits of linking research and industry, art and science, ecology and the economy, nature-based solutions, biomimicry, eco-design, the circular economy... all this is just a fantastic cupboard of tools. We need everything and everyone to design and build what comes next. The future is a symphony and a team sport. We won't win against each other or with just one player.

Re-engaging with Nature

Stop thinking of everything we do solely in terms of mankind. Rebuilding society with Nature means teaming up with the Living World again to re-learn, rediscover and (re)consider it as our best model and our most powerful partner. We need to reteach about life, at school and elsewhere!

Building the grand coalition between Biodiversity and Climate

Biodiversity and Climate are two related issues, but not of the same nature: Biodiversity is a SOLUTION to the Climate PROBLEM. The excess carbon in the air is not extraterrestrial, it comes from the life we burn, and cannot be returned, precisely because there is less life to reintegrate it. Carbon is the cycle of life, which knows how to manage, transform and store it. So, « if we want to decarbonise the atmosphere, we urgently need to recarbonise the Earth« . Biodiversity is our KEY issue, and everything else depends on it. Biodiversity budgets must match carbon budgets.

TEAMING UP, between ourselves, between research and industry, between the economy and ecology, between science and opinions, between Biodiversity and Climate, between the short and the long term, between our cultures, our duties and our desires, between our dreams and our realities ... teaming up between Nature and Man, to rebuild the future. We have everything we need to embark on this new journey.
