Plenary 2024 «Business, Nature & Society»

[ WHAT IF WE CHANGED EVERYTHING?

How can the simple act of reconsidering the place of life in the act of entrepreneurship become a powerful lever for transforming a company? This is illustrated by the testimonial and concrete presentation of Pocheco, a biomimetic company that has completely overhauled its economic, ecological and social model to become a genuine demonstrator in the service of others. What were the triggers? What steps were taken? What choices have been made in terms of raw materials, processes, equipment, etc. How can we transform our industrial production facilities and rethink their links with the local area? How can we (re)reconcile economic, social and environmental performance? The company has become a demonstrator of the field of possibilities, thanks to its management of water and energy, its relationship with human and non-human living organisms, its way of occupying the site and the means of transport used. A presentation of the lessons learned, the obstacles encountered, the successes, as well as the financial and non-financial indicators of the approach.

[ AND WHAT IF THE LIVING WORLD BECAME "THE BOSS"?

Before product innovation, the bio-inspiration approach begins with a structuring questioning of the way in which the 'corporate species', as a living species, impacting and connected to its ecosystem, can and could live better, in an optimised way and for mutual benefit with its environment-resources. Establishing the principles of Life as a prerequisite for management is already an incredible method for setting a new course, and the means to achieve it. And while the idea of the "impact company" or "regenerative company" is a new and formidable emerging approach, we still need to know how to measure this impact, combine approaches (biomimicry, eco-design, life cycle, etc.) and clearly define the criteria and rules of the game.

[ AND WHAT IF ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE BECAME GLOBAL PERFORMANCE?

We have a certain obsession with performance and growth, in both cases with the aim of constantly increasing them. Is this reasonable? And is it the only model? The 3 speakers, through their respective research, analysis and operational thinking, will reveal other ways of approaching the idea of controlled, shared, harmonious and therefore sustainable development.

For a long time, human beings have survived on Earth by tinkering with what we knew at the time. Monocultures, pesticides, fossil fuels... We now understand that we have to do things differently. The idea behind this brilliant book is simple: the instructions for better living in our world are right before our eyes. All we have to do is observe living things. "Why have we cut ourselves off so much? Cut ourselves off from the world and from life? There are books that give birth to you, or give birth to you again. The one you have in your hands is of that rare kind. Erik Orsenna >> Read more

[ TERRAMATION, WHAT IF OUR BURIAL PROLONGED LIFE?

It's a cultural, political, spiritual and, of course, ecological revolution. It's well under way, and it could profoundly change our relationship with death and alter the whole landscape of the funeral industry. With the start-up Humo Sapiens as our guest speaker, we present this shift in thinking and its modus operandi; take stock of the legal, regulatory and political context (which is taking the issue very seriously); and share some scientific data on the subject. Deeptech is also about culture, and this one is sure to make you think!
