Prof. Marc Desmulliez was born in Lille (North, France) in 1963 and holds four degrees: Diplome d’Ingenieur d’Electricitefrom the Grande Ecole formally called Supelec (Paris, France), Master of Advanced Studies (Cambridge, UK), College diploma in Microwave and Modern Optics (UCL, UK) and Ph.D. in Optoelectronics (Heriot-Watt, UK).
After a couple of years working in industry, he became Lecturer in Electrical Engineering at Heriot-Watt University(Edinburgh, Scotland) in 1996, Senior Lecturer in 1999, Reader in 2001 and Professor in 2006. His research interests lie in microwave sensing, manufacturing of medical devices for unmet clinical needs, water purification and sanitation and more recently nature inspired engineering, also called biomimetics. He has co-authored around 480 publications and holds 9 patents in these fields of research.
Marc is also interested in commercialisation of research. He span out the Company MicroStencil in January 2003 specialized in the manufacturing of electroformed stencils for the microelectronics industry. The technology was transferred to DEK, the world leading stencil printing equipment manufacturer. In January 2017 he span out MicroSense Technologies Ltd, specialised in microwave sensor systems for the detection of waste in food. The Company received the first shared prize of the Converge Challenge, the most prestigious prize of Entrepreneurship in Scotland. He also founded the Microsystems Engineering Centre (MISEC) in 2000, and created the first Master of Science in the UK in microsystems Technology in 2001.
Since December 2016, he is leading the Nature Inspired Manufacturing Centre at Heriot-Watt University and looks at tools to translate biological principles into manufacturing practices.
